Do not forget to pay your nursing care insurance premiums

If  Category 1 insured person (65 years of age or older) fails to pay his/her nursing care insurance premiums on time, not only will a late fee be added, but he/she may also be subject to restrictions on insurance benefits depending on the length of the delinquency. We ask for your cooperation in paying your premiums on time so that you can use nursing care services with peace of mind when you need them.

How to pay insurance premiums (for those 65 years of age and older)

There are two types to pay premiums for Category 1 insured persons (those 65 years of age or older), depending on the amount of pension received.

Special collection (deductions from pension)

Those who receive an old-age pension, survivor’s pension, or disability pension of 180,000 yen or more per year are subject to special collection (pension deductions) from their pensions and are required to pay in six installments in April, June, August, October, December, and February of the following year.

Temporary payment may be made with a statement of payment even if the annual amount of pension benefits is more than 180,000 yen.

In the following cases, even if the amount of pension benefits received is 180,000 yen or more per year, the payment is temporarily made with a statement of payment until the switch to special collection is made.

  • If you turn 65 (Category 1 insured person) in the middle of the fiscal year
  • If you move in from another municipality
  • If you start receiving a pension (old-age pension, survivor’s pension, or disability pension) in the middle of the fiscal year
  • If the income tier of the premium has changed due to redoing income tax returns, etc.
  • If your pension is temporarily suspended

etc.

General collection

Those who receive an old-age pension, survivor’s pension, or disability pension of less than 180,000 yen per year, those who do not receive a pension, those who turned 65 in the middle of the fiscal year, and those who moved to this town are required to pay by payment slip or account transfer, and are required to pay in eight installments from July to February of the following year.

Please refer to the following “Tax Payment Methods” page for information on payment deadlines and payment methods.

If you fail to pay your premiums

If you fail to pay premiums in arrears without special circumstances, the following measures may be taken against you.

  • The user pays the cost of the service once, and the insurance benefit is paid upon application.
  • Insurance benefits are applied to premiums in arrears.
  • User contribution rates will be increased; high-cost nursing care service fees will no longer be available.

When payment is difficult

If it becomes difficult to pay insurance premiums due to special circumstances such as disasters or unemployment, you may be eligible for a reduction or exemption of premiums.
